An earache is a common complication among young children

. Yes, they can also happen to teenagers and adults, but they are most common in young children. Any parent who has spent any amount of time up with their child when he or she is experiencing an earache knows the seriousness of this affliction. The pain an earache can create often keeps children awake at night, therefore the parents are awake with a crying child. Most parents have dealt with this before and all wonder why it happens and how to treat it. Some of the answers may be a little surprising, however.

One of the most common reasons to visit the pediatrician is because the child is experiencing an earache. Statistics show that by age three more than 70% of children have experienced an earache, and more than a third of those children have had reoccurring earaches. Often times the pediatrician will treat the earache with an antibiotic. However, this does not always cure the pain for the child. So why would this be? Is there another reason that the child is experiencing ear pain, if not because of bacteria?

Some parents may find it surprising to hear that possibly the problem is not an infection related to bacteria at all. It may actually be caused by the neck or back being out of alignment. In a case like this is when it is a good idea to take your child to the chiropractor for further examination.

So what would the chiropractor do? Many parents would like to ask. The chiropractor would determine if the inability for the child's body to combat the infection is due to irritation in the small nerves in the spine. If the nerves are irritated then this would cause an abnormal tension in the neck muscles. This creates a chain reaction which leads to the lymphatic ducts within the ear to not be able to drain properly. When this happens the child's body is unable to naturally fight the infection.

Another thing that the chiropractor would look at is the spinal vertebrae. The chiropractor would be looking to see if it is out of alignment or not able to move in its normal range of motion. This can happen to any child, as all children are active and fall down or any other way bang themselves up.

The most important job of the chiropractor is to make sure that the cause of the earache is correctly identified. In identifying the cause other reasons must be kept in consideration. Other reasons that may create an earache include tooth infections, foreign substances in the ear, external canal infections, mastoiditis, sinusitis, and sometimes even tumors.

If the cause of the child's earache is determined to be fixed by the chiropractor then treatment is applied. Most commonly the chiropractor would adjust the spine and manipulate the neck muscles, which would restore the body's normal lymph drainage. Treatment is a short procedure and most patients feel almost immediate results. If your child is currently on an antibiotic then you are at a low risk of a serious complicating infection. Children who are not on an antibiotic may need to be watched closely to make sure everything went well, and the earache is gone.

Earaches are an annoying fact of life but are something that can not be ignored. If left untreated it could result in permanent hearing damage. If you or your loved one is experiencing pain within your ear it is recommended to visit your doctor, but don't be surprised if the chiropractor is who helps you in the end.
