One of the most common ailments found in American adults is back pain

, and specifically low back pain. Why is this?

Disc Degeneration -

Well, a lot of times low back pain can be caused by herniated discs in the lumbar region of the back (the lower back). Spinal disc degeneration happens in all of us as we age, so a herniated disc could occur as the result of something as seemingly unthreatening as a sneeze if degeneration has reached that degree.

But degeneration can be prevented or minimized to some extent by taking care of your back, since injuries, especially those that go untreated or don't heal properly, can lead to increased degeneration. Even simple daily activities that put a strain on your back, whether at work or at home, can cause increased degeneration over time.


Moderate daily exercise and prevention-based chiropractic care can help reduce strain caused by stress, overexertion, or just the everyday wear and tear on the body.

Muscle Strain -

Muscle strain is another common cause of pain in the lower back. Like disc degeneration, while the pain from muscle strain can manifest suddenly and without apparent warning, it is a problem that has been building up, unheeded, for a long time. Lactic and pyruvic acids are byproducts of muscular activity, and muscle strain occurs when high levels of these acids have accumulated in the muscles.

Again, being attentive to daily strain on the body can help prevent problems like this from developing. Be sure to stretch before and after physical activity. Get periodic massages to help release some of that tension and toxicity. Again, chiropractic care, by aligning the spine properly, helps to prevent muscular problems as well because it keeps the whole body functioning properly.

Relaxation Can Be Key -


One reason why our society is so plagued by back pain is the degree of stress in our lives. It's hard to keep up with it all, the water bill and the mortgage and the phone bill and the car payment and the insurance premiums and the dentist and soccer practice and the cable bill, and now the toilet's backed up and you have to call the plumber, and laundry needs to be done because everyone's out of clean underwear, and the dishes are dirty and the cat's out of food again and what in the heck are we going to have for dinner?

We all understand that we're lucky to have these problems-even if we're so overwhelmed that we don't always feel lucky-but sometimes I think we all crave more simplicity, fewer material possessions and monetary commitments. Stress will get you every time; sometimes back pain can be the least of the health issues it causes.

So engage in relaxation techniques as regularly as you can, whether yoga, meditation, a quiet walk, just laying down and listening to music, or dancing to it. That will help release tension and toxins in your muscles and bones, and help to decrease the likelihood of disc degeneration, muscle strain, or any number of other ailments.
