, and the Chivas USA defeated the Kansas City Wizards 2-0. Get Chivas USA Playoffs tickets and see Braun score a goal. Chivas USA (13-9-5) has racked up 44 points and qualified for the postseason for the fourth straight year. They moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Western Conference with Houston and Los Angeles. Chivas has one match in hand on both the Dynamo and Galaxy, and has three matches remaining. Goalkeeper Zack Thornton recorded two saves and earned his 12th shutout of the season (leads MLS). The goalkeeper moved within one of the single-season club record set by Brad Guzan in 2007.
Chivas USA coach Preki admitted that his club was not sharp in the first half. The coach continued to say that his team was "slow and sluggish." Eight Chivas players missed the match due to injuries. Preki acknowledged that he tried to warn his players all week that this match was not going to be an easy victory. The coach recognized from the first moments that his team was not up for the challenge. During the break, Preki must have said something to his players since they used more defensive pressure to take control in the second half. The coach noted that Chivas' performance was better in the second half. He said, "When we pressed them in their half (of the field), we pressed them with a lot more commitment. Our starting point with the ball was already closer to the goal."
Interim Wizards coach peter Vermes concurred with Preki that Chivas improved its play in the second half. The coach said Kansas City played well for 65 minutes before he saw his team die out. Braun, who was out most of the season because he suffered a concussion, scored his first goal since May 2 in the 71st minute of the game. Kliestan started the play with a 32-yard free kick that goalkeeper Kevin Hartman deflected across his body with his right hand. Chivas' Yamith Cuesta recovered the ball on the right side of the penalty area before he fed it to Braun, who scored from four yards. In the 74th minute of the game, Kljestan added his fifth goal of the season.
Eduardo Lillingston received a pass from Mariano Trujillo, who then sent a long ball along the right flank and crossed to Kljestan. Kljestan went around three defenders before scoring from seven yards. Hartman said he expected everybody to contribute, "to be flying in and do whatever they can to make sure they extend that hope, that dream of making the playoffs." Kansas City (8-12-8) had their best chance to score in the 57th minute, but Claudio Lopez's 30-yard shot deflected off the crossbar.
Chivas USA's Claudio Suarez made his first MLS start this year and played for 45 minutes. The defender only played in nine games in all competition due to a strained right calf. Kansas City's Jimmy Conrad and Chivas USA's Jonathan Bornstein missed the match because they represented the United States in a World Cup qualifier in Honduras.
