But the real cause of concern here is the possibility of ill effects of being exposed to chlorine for a longer period. Studies have shown that chlorine inside water usually reacts with skin cells, sweats, urine etc. to form other chemical byproducts which can be toxic in nature and which can enter our body through skin cells, water or the air we breathe. Though it is too early to draw any authentic conclusion about the negative effect of chlorine on human bodies but some studies have linked it to the risk of cancer and serious respiratory infections leading to asthma. Besides, getting skin irritation is a common thing which most people must have been experienced during swimming.

As we all know precaution is always better than cure. So below are some lists of dos and donts which can prevent us from the possible side effects of chlorinated water in any water bodies:

1.Always take a shower before and after swimming. By doing this you can clean off all the organic materials from your body like urine, sweats etc. that has a high possibility of reacting with chlorine inside water.

2.Never swim in a pool which has a high chlorine smell. It is quite essential to maintain the chlorine level inside a water body. According to the Department of Public Health the chlorine level always should be maintained at 0.5 ppm (particles per million). Anything above or below can lead to various health problems.

3.There are also some alternatives to chlorine which we can use safely to disinfect the water. These are copper, ozone, silver ions and moss etc.

4.And last but not the least we should think twice before diving into the water if we are suffering from any kind of skin allergies, asthma etc. to prevent any serious mishaps.
