There is much good news concerning the role of cholesterol- lowering drugs in the media recently. Earlier in the month it was reported that statin drugs may lower the risk of colon cancer by up to 12 percent. Lipitor and Crestor have been reported to have effects way beyond the controlling of cholesterol levels and decreasing the risk of developing heart disease.

Long term use is associated with the reduction in risk of several cancers which include breast, prostate, lung, pancreas and liver. The hypothesis comes from the results of 22 scientific studies of which included 2.5 million volunteers.

Earlier in the year, British researchers reported that the taking of statins increases one's risk of liver dysfunction, kidney failure, weakness of the muscles and cataracts.
