Cholesterol Treatment And The Risk Of Kidney Failure

More and more U.S

More and more U.S. citizens decide to take cholesterol lowering medications, when a healthy diet and physical exercises are not enough to lower the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. Prescription drugs from the group of statins like Zocor for example can be used also to increase the level of good cholesterol and to prevent heart attack, stroke and blood vessel problems.

However many patients are not completely informed about the risks involved, when they begin a treatment. Like all medications, Zocor and the rest of its group can also develop a series of side effects. Some of them are mild, other more severe. The most common, mild problems patients might face during treatment include headaches, nausea, weakness, muscle and abdominal pain. These are more likely to appear in the first stage of the treatment and disappear in time.

More severe side effects are related to the muscle damages caused by the treatment. If patients notice unexplained muscle pain and cramps they should contact their doctors, because those could be the symptoms of muscle fiber malfunction, a medical condition known under the name of myopathy. If the condition is not diagnosed in time, it will worsen. Muscle fibers will break down and release waste material into the bloodstream. When that reaches the kidney, it will affect its filtering capacity and potentially cause kidney failure. This severe condition is known as rhabdomyolysis.

The risks of developing the potentially deadly disease depend on a series of factors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2011 regarding the 80mg dose of simvastatin, which represents the highest risk of causing muscle damage. The condition is more likely to develop during the first year of treatment and affect patients with previous heart or kidney problems. Therefore doctors are advised not to prescribe the 80mg dose to new patients and to maintain it only in case of patients who are taking it for more than one year and developed no side effects.

Patients who already suffered severe kidney damage due to the medication should consult a simvastatin lawyer to discuss the possibility of financial compensation.
