Women get all the fun when it comes to clothes don't they? Or, at least that's the way it feels sometimes anyway. While sarongs and batwings may be best left to extroverts or celebrity A-listers, that doesn't mean you're stuck with boring knits or plain t-shirts.

One of the best types of clothing for men to experiment with has to be shirts. While you may have to wear a relatively plain and boring shirt during working hours, you can certainly find plenty of jazzier versions to brighten up nights out or special occasions.

Even if you're limited by work dress-codes, you'll be able to find shirts that remain respectable while still allow you to stand out from the crowd. For example, a subtle pin stripe can do wonders for an otherwise plain shirt - adding anything from a slimming effect to a gangster edge.

Or you could choose a white shirt that has a classic cut but some seriously cool buttons. While some colours may be a little too much for your boss, there's a good chance you'll be able to get away with some pastels shades. From light pink to pale yellow, you can add a subtly different look to your work suit with a pastel shirt - putting you head and shoulders above your colleagues in the style stakes.

If you're not up for experimenting with colour, then why not try out a few new cuts instead? Rather than going for a one-shape fits all classic shirt, you could try a slim fit the next time you're looking for ways to show off your fashion sense. These are best suited to people who are slim themselves however, as beer bellies can be accentuated by this cut.

On the other hand, checked or flannel shirts are a great casual choice, and a good cosy one can make a nice change to your average sweatshirt or knitted jumper when cold weather is approaching. Complement it with a good pair of bootcut jeans and some sturdy boots for a fashionable, yet practical winter look.
