We all want to look our best, but with so many choices when it comes to eyewear trying on pair after pair can get mind numbing. However if you know what styles would compliment your face shape you can save a lot of time and have better luck finding just the right pair that helps flatter your features.

Determining Your Face Shape

First it is important to determine the shape of your face; there are a few ways you can do this. For most people the easiest way it to simply pull your hair back, if you need to, and look in the mirror. Look closely at your hairline, jaw line and cheeks. What shape do you see?

Another way you can determine the shape of your face is either take a picture or find an existing picture that has a clear shot of your face and outline the shape.

Round

Round faces are similarly proportioned in both length and width with a round jaw line and soft curves. Avoid small, round frames. Instead look for frames that sit higher to create the look of a longer, slimmer shape. Frames that are a bit more angular can also help balance the soft features and add definition. Frames that are squared with straight lines on the top are very popular right now and they can provide a nice compliment to a round face.

Oval

Oval faces are longer and a bit thinner with a chin that is a bit more narrow than the forehead, but with overall balanced features and a rounded jaw line. This face shape can wear a wider variety of frames more easily, but there are still certain styles that may work better. Look for wider frames with strong lines on top to make your face look broader and shorter. You may want to experiment with more bold shapes or cat-eye style frames.

Heart

Heart-shaped faces are longer than they are wide, with a wider forehead, more pronounced cheekbones and a narrow jaw line - a bit like an upside down triangle. People with this shape of face should avoid highlighting the widest parts of the face with strong top lines or decorative frames. Instead choose oval or round frames with low temples and curves upward.

Square

Square faces are typically equally proportioned in length and width with a squared chin, strong jaw line and broad forehead. Look for oval or round frames that have upward curves to soften the jaw line and create a longer looking face. Semi-rimless and cat-eye style frames will help flatter features for people with square faces.

Finding the right pair of glasses can make a big difference in the way you look and how you feel about yourself. Knowing what styles may compliment your features may help you look at new styles you may not have considered.
