Poas volcano national park is the most visited national park in Costa Rica because of its proximity to San Jose and Alajuela

. It makes a pleasant day trip for tourists and locals alike.

However, the large majority of visitors to Poas volcano never get to see the crater because they arrive too late in the day. It is important to stay in the area and arrive when the park opens to give yourself the best chance of seeing the crater clearly.

The weather at Poas Volcano is very unpredictable and can change with shocking speed. Most people that elect to stay in the city do themselves an injustice by thinking they can make it up to the Poas Volcano National Park early from the city. Even if you leave early the chance is you will get hindered by the morning rush hour traffic in and around the central valley cities.

Another misconception often held by tourists to Costa Rica is that the airport is in San Jose. The airport is in fact in Alajuela, another city about 20 minutes outside San Jose. Although many people elect to spend their first and last night in San Jose or in the surrounding cities, it is advisable to choose an accommodation option outside the cities to maximise your time in Costa Rica.

Unless you specifically want to visit a sight within the cities, there really is not much to see apart from low cost stores selling imported Chinese junk and roadside food stalls. San Jose is especially disappointing in this matter since it offers tourists very little in the form of pleasing attractions and is more of a concrete jungle of medium high rises and confusing one way streets.

Because the airport is on the outskirts of all this chaos, it is easy to pick up a rental car or take some form of public transport to escape the grimy cities and head into the beautiful countryside as soon as possible.

Most people, who are smart enough to do so, choose Poas Volcano as a start and end point to their vacation. It is just 45 minutes from the airport and at 8000ft above sea level; it is cool and pleasant and affords the most spectacular views of the central valley.

Choosing to stay outside of the cities has two benefits. You avoid the chaos and get to stay close to the volcano for early access and the best chance of seeing the crater at Poas Volcano.
