Choosing A Good Cat Vet

If you are owned by an animal there is no doubt that you will need to have a vet at some point

. Think like the Boy Scouts and be prepared. Never wait until you need a vet to search for one. In fact, if you are thinking of adding a new member to your family, start thinking of a veterinarian as well. A vet is an extension of your family so be choosy.

Look for a vet with excellent pet skills, along with excellent people skills. Remember your pet can't communicate your problems like you. This is why it's especially important for your vet and pet to maintain a healthy relationship in order to meet their needs.

What is your approach to pet care? Are you very conservative when it comes to giving medications? Do you believe the animal should be vaccinated every year? Do you like the idea of holistic care? Do you want a general practitioner or a specialist? After you decide what your approach is, find a vet that thinks like you do.

Follow these steps to find that perfect vet:

Ask Friends who they use

*Visit the vet office.

oAre you warmly greeted? Are the staff courteous and professional

oWill the receptionist let you meet with the vet briefly?

oIs the office area clean?

oAre cats and dogs separated?

oAre emergency services available afterhours? What ER does the clinic use?

oHow many vets are in practice?

oIs the location agreeable to you?

oHow does the costs fit into your budget?

oCheck for membership in the American Animal Hospital Association. AAHA membership means that a veterinary hospital has voluntarily pursued and met AAHA's standards in the areas of facility, equipment and quality care. This basically means that they met a national standard of best practices.

oWhat does your gut say??? Go with it!

Make an appointment with your vet, and if you do not feel satisfied, find another vet. Breaking up can be stressful. But chances are if your not comfortable, your animal isn't either.
