Choosing A Theme - Why Mediterranean Design?

A great design theme for a welcoming and homely interior is the Mediterranean style

. This is a European decorating theme that has everything - elegance, comfort, warmth and trend.

The colors are often in the shades of red, blue, orange, violet and brown. The walls, usually made of stucco are indicative of an earthly home. Although the materials make the space sophisticated as with any European style, Mediterranean theme upholds a certain homely and comfortable atmosphere. Even when you are in a Mediterranean-inspired commercial establishment, the place still reeks of coziness and warmth. Take note of this the next time you dine in a Mediterranean restaurant.

You will notice that a big part of this homely ambiance is also because of the use of clay and tiles. Although hardwood is a popular choice, tiles, including the patterned and designed ones are preferred for its interesting design factor.

Furniture pieces are mostly bigger in size and lower in height. Because of these qualities, accessories are not really necessary. Minimal use of accents will do well to maintain an organized and airy feel to the place. The top choice of material for furniture is wood.

A good decorating technique is to add area rugs. They give more color and texture to the space. Turkish, Persian and Spanish area rugs are ideal for a Mediterranean theme.

A wall hanging is a great way to complete the look. Colorful artworks, especially those with dominant deep colors will complement the decorations. Pictures or paintings of a sunset, the mountains and vast multi-colored lands are perfect. A richly colored or elaborately designed tapestry is also a nice wall decor. Alternatively, an area rug can be used as a wall hanging. It makes for an easy centerpiece.

Mediterranean styles, although simple, make extensive use of texture, clean lines and simple details. It's not very complicated to do, but you can get a very sophisticated yet homey space if you manage to get all the elements to complement each other. Warm colors and low furniture create that relaxing mood, while the artier pieces give the space its more upper-class aspect.
