Choosing An Ebook Reader

It's now been three years since Amazon launched the first Kindle reader. Notwithstanding the massive influence of the Kindle, it's worth recalling that it wasn't the first ebook reader on the market. However, ebooks are now becoming firmly established - due in large measure to the influence of the Kindle. It's debatable whether or not ebooks will replace "real" books in future - but they certainly appear to be here to stay.

However, ebook readers seem to have been adopted by the public and many people are buying them. Recent price cuts by Barnes and Noble, Amazon and Sony means that ebook readers are now a much more affordable option for many customers. The Kindle may be the market leader, it's not the only available option. So, if you're thinking about getting your first ebook reader, what are the main points to consider?

Perhaps the most critical factor for consideration is the quality of the display. Most ebook readers have e-ink technology displays. The reading experience provided by this is really very similar to reading text printed on paper. It's a lot easier on your eyes than a back-lit computer screen. It is also easy to read in direct sunlight or even glare from fluorescent lighting. Another advantage of e-ink technology is that it draws power only when "turning the page" - so battery life tends to be measured in weeks rather than hours.

It's tempting to go for the largest display possible. Clearly readers with bigger screens are more expensive than those with smaller displays. Clearly they are larger and weigh more. This will have implications on the portability of the device. That may not be a problem for you if you intend to read mainly at home. Even so, a bigger reader will be more difficult to operate with one hand - something which most users will wish to do.

The facility to browse and download books from practically anywhere in under a minute was a significant factor in the success of the Kindle reader. Nevertheless, both Amazon and Barnes and Noble have now launched Wi-Fi only entry level models of their readers. These cost a little less than the 3G readers and could be a good option for anyone who doesn't foresee the need to download books without using a computer or connecting via a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Clearly there's no point in having an ebook reader if there isn't a good selection of books to read on it. For the moment at least, no industry standard format for ebooks exists. The ePub format is used by Google - but Kindle books come in a format which is unique to the Kindle. However, Amazon has released a number of free apps that lets users read Kindle books on a wide variety of different devices - without the need for a Kindle reader.

Ebook prices can be very different on different readers. In fact, If you read a lot of books, then picking the right reader could potentially save you enough money on ebooks to make the reader pay for itself in a just a few months. Before you decide which reader to choose, it's well worth checking.
