Choosing An Effective Domain Name
The choice of a domain name can be daunting and some research needs to be undertaken
. Nonetheless, there are a couple of points that most people agree on and that is that you should select your domain name prior to the launch of your business. This is particularly relevant if your market niche has a great deal of competition. If you find a domain name you particularly like, do not wait for too long, because once a domain name has been taken, it will be gone. The chances are that even if you finish up with a domain name that you eventually do not want, you will probably be able to sell it and you may even be able to do this at a profit!
The next thing to consider is whether or not to be .com. If you are a massive business with an enormous budget, the answer is to be .com, but even if you are a smaller business struggling for a good search engine position, then still choose .com primarily because it will be easier to remember. There are many people who cannot agree on the value of this and many say that they are of no higher value when it comes to search engine rankings, which may be the case. Nonetheless, if you dismiss this strategy, then people may well just remember you as a hard to recall URL with an ending that is not .com.
The next factor to decide upon is to whether it is best to have a keyword domain, or a creative, snappy domain that epitomises your brand. The keyword domain may well be boring and be crammed with hyphens, e.g. best-linen-in-england.com and at face value would be difficult to brand. Further, they are difficult to fit onto business cards and challenging to explain over a telephone. On the other hand choosing a creative brandable name means you have a catchy and memorable URL. When you use this URL, people will remember it.
However, there are plenty of good businesses who have failed to launch their products successfully or to be listed highly in search engines. It has been said that direct navigation traffic outnumbers search engine traffic, i.e. more people are visiting websites by typing in the URL directly. In this context, people are recommending having brandable domain names, but you have to ask yourself about how people will find you. The fact is that they will probably find you via search engines. They will type into the search box best linen in England and so your website should be optimised with the keywords best linen in England.
The advantage of a brandable domain name is that it is very good for business cards and is really compulsory if you have an off line business. Being able to find a good domain to brand your business is something you cannot do with any software-driven suggestion tool. Most of the best hybrid domain names have long gone, but if you can think of a really good and unique idea for your brand, you may be able to get the dotcom name for yourself.
The main point to remember is to reserve a good domain name early on, as they quickly disappear.
