The two main riding styles are Western and English. Popular western riding activities include barrel racing and trail riding, while English riding focuses on position, equitation and horsemanship.

Instructors should be licensed and should not mind if the parents or guardians come and watch them work. The way they interact with the students tells a lot about them. If you find trash, damaged equipment or discarded equestrian supplies during your visit, you will do better not doing any business with them.

Ask the camp organizers what kind of equipment they provide the students attending the camp. Spend a few minutes in the tack room and look whether the equipment is clean and well-maintained. Damaged equipment will be devastating to the students safety. Some barns may just arrange the camps and ask you to supply your own equipment.

As for the dress, riding boots or paddock boots are preferable to any other kind of footwear. Another basic item that should be on the list is riding pants, known as breeches or jodhpurs.
