It seems like everyone is making the switch from cable television to satellite broadcasting these days

. And it isn't hard to see why: from superior quality to a wider range of channels and programming, satellite TV generally offers a much more complete TV experience. Still, choosing a satellite provider should be done cautiously. Most satellite TV companies generate most of their revenues through contracts, so before you jump in and sign off for months or years to come, make sure you have done your homework and are satisfied with the company you are about to choose.

Like I just mentioned, most companies depend on contracts to support them, which means that they, like cell phone companies, will often through in a lot of perks to get your business: free installation service, free equipment, etc. Carefully review all the "extras" that the different companies offer and don't be hesitant to bargain with them a bit, too, to snag some perks like digital video recording (DVR) at no extra cost. And find out exactly what is and what is not included in the contract: extra costs, termination fees, etc.

When it comes down to it, though, most people choose their provider according to the range of channels offered by each: the more, the better. And this might be the case for you too, but make sure you are not paying extra for tons of channels that you know you will never watch. Furthermore, small providers sometimes offer a better selection of sports, movie channels, or other selective programming groups. If you primarily want satellite because you want to catch every football or basketball game, you might be able to save some money by selecting a provider that specializes in that preference.

Still, no matter what you like to watch, quality customer service and equipment is the key between a provider you are comfortable with and one that will drive you up the wall. If your service is constantly interrupted with technical problems and it takes days for it to get fixed, your money could be better spent elsewhere. To gauge how reliable and helpful a satellite provider is, talk with friends and neighbors about their experiences. They will give you the blunt truth about a company.

Keeping these suggestions and thoughts in mind will help you find a satellite provider you can trust and are satisfied with for months or even years to come.
