Choosing Between The Different Laptop Brands
Choosing a laptop computer is no small task and is something you should certainly
think very carefully about before committing to a particular model as the machine will be a constant companion for many years to come.
Your first consideration in exploring your choices in laptops should be what you intend to use the computer for. Some brands, such as Dell laptops, tend to be more affordably designed and more efficient than is typical on the market. This translates into a reasonably priced machine that would be great for business or personal use, but would not make an ideal entertainment' machine as it will lack the more expensive peripherals that go into making a typical entertainment oriented model such as a Sony Vaio.
Once you know what you are going to be doing with your computer you are ready to start browsing the specific models within each brand. The major manufacturers like Dell, Sony, and ASUS break their models down into several categories based on what they will be used for, and the category that suits your needs best is where you should start looking. You should find a model or two from each brand that you are interested in so you can compare prices and specifications and of course read reviews on these models. This can be the most important step in choosing which brand to buy; you may find that many people complain of a certain Sony laptop having monitor issues or that particular ASUS laptops don't handle being carried around very well. These are just a few examples of potential laptop computer problems that you want to avoid, and reading unbiased reviews on these products will inform you of the particular risk associated with each brand and model.
Be certain to look into each brand's warranty policy as well. Accidents do happen, and tend to do so more often with laptops rather than desktops due to their portable nature. If you are going to be doing a great deal of travelling with your computer, a stronger and/or longer warranty policy will serve you well, as will the option of extending your warranty for a small fee. Regardless, you will want to know what types of protection each brand offers so that you can choose something that best fits the way you will be using your computer.
Pricing is another consideration, but in many cases is inflated to a much higher degree than it should be; comparable laptops between the major brands are priced very close to one another, and a significantly lower price for a similar laptop computer often means that it uses cheaper parts meaning that it won't last as long or be nearly as resilient as its competitor. You certainly want to shop around for the best deal you can find but it is far more important to choose a computer with no technical flaws that has a warranty that will fit your purposes than saving $50 - $60 on purchasing the computer.
