For the adult who is unfamiliar with BMX bikes choosing a childs BMX can be a confusing task
. Firstly, it is necessary to consider what the child really wants out of a BMX. If with his or her current bike a child shows a preference for tearing round an open grass or mud area, then it is worth considering buying one of the more traditional racing BMX bikes.
On the other hand, if a child shows an inclination to try and make his or her current bike perform small jumps or wheelies then it will probably be one of the jump or vert bikes that should be purchased. A cross between the pure trick BMX bikes (or freestyle bikes) and racing bikes, jump bikes should have the strength and build to permit certain jumps and tricks whilst still permitting the child a decent distance ride.
Pure freestyle bikes will usually have pegs on the side to assist the rider in standing to perform certain tricks. Some of the tricks may be well out of a childs range of abilities, but the child might well simply prefer this type of bike because of its image. Freestyle bikes can also double up as normal pedal bikes, although the pegs should then be unscrewed.
