Choosing Childcare Punggol

Punggol, also spelt as Ponggol, is a neighborhood in northeastern Singapore

. It means hurling sticks at the branches of fruit trees to bring them down to the ground in Malay. The name suggests that Punggol was a fruit growing district where fruits and forest produce were sold wholesale. Once a large kampong and a fishing village, today it has been earmarked to become the "Waterfront Town", the 21st century housing estate for yuppies in Singapore. Bounded by three rivers, the Sungei Punggol, the Sungei Serangoon and the New River, the new Punggol Town would sit between nearby Coney Island and the mainland. The entire area, north-east of Singapore, is bounded by Sungei Serangoon to the east, Tampines Expressway to the south, Sungei Punggol to the west, Selat Johor and Serangoon Harbour to the north, and covers an area of approximately 957 ha. The North-East MRT line, with a LRT link, connects Punggol with the rest of Singapore. Families living or working near the area can find suitable preschool Punggol for their children.

In its early days, Punggol used to be a well-established rural district dotted with farmhouses and farm structures, which were serviced by roads and dirt tracks. Many of the Chinese villagers were engaged in poultry, pig or fish farming, as well as plantation and farm produce. The last pig farm closed down in 1990. Hydroponic non-pollutive vegetable farms and orchid farms used to flourish along the Cheng Lim Farmways and Buangkok Farmways, along with old kampongs and low-rise residential areas. It was also famous for its seafood restaurants and sea sports development. Most of these farms have given way to the high-rise HDB flats of Sengkang New Town and Punggol New Town and childcare center Punggol. Its history includes a national heritage site, Punggol Point which saw the massacre of Chinese civilians by Japanese soldiers during World War II.

Punggol now makes headlines for exciting housing plans in the 21st century. In 2007, Punggol 21 Plus was unveiled as part of Remaking Our Heartland plans for Punggol to realize its vision as A Waterfront Town of the 21st Century. Key to this will be a new waterway that will run through the town which will offer its residents and children at childcare Punggol a unique lifestyle experience and new waterfront housing. Residents, visitors and kids from kindergarten Punggol can look forward to various recreational activities, ranging from water sports to a leisurely walk along the landscaped promenade on both banks of the waterway. Residents with kids at nursery Punggol can also look forward to resort-style housing, which leverage on the attractions of the waterway and the promenade. This first public housing parcel along the Punggol Waterway will set the benchmark for the rest of the developments along the 4.2km Waterway. The development, comprising 1,200 units, is scheduled for launch in mid-2010.
