Graphic design has been part of early civilization in caves, palaces and textile. It was popularized during the advent of printing and the recent explosion of visual communication and advertising. Since then, graphic design has always been a combination of text and imagery. In the beginning it was done through any surface, stones, walls, textile and paper. Jobs in graphic design back then were limited and not lucrative. Graphic design and the skills required were limited and applicable to print media hence there was confusion on the difference between graphic design and fine arts. The concept of advertising and mass communication plays a big role in identifying the difference between the two.

Gone are the days where jobs in graphic design are limited to print media alone. There is a growing demand for jobs in graphic design and the demand is not limited to advertising alone. The basic skills needed in a getting jobs in graphic design includes visual arts which is done using traditional media, photography and other computer generated art, Typography or the art of modifying glyphs or characters used in modern design, Page layout which is the art of arranging elements into a page, Interface design which is currently the more popular graphic design skill because it is used for web pages, web advertising and uses modern applications and finally, print making, modernized by not limiting graphic design on paper alone but on any surface such as glass, acrylic, cement and the likes.

Given all the possibilities that require a graphic design, jobs in graphic designs are not limited to the advertising industry. Even the manufacturing industry, airline industry, communication industry, sports & showbiz industry requires graphic design requirements.

In choosing jobs in graphic design, one must consider an area to focus on; there are various specific functions to consider such as becoming an Art Director, one who is in charge of a creative team that produces artworks for magazines, billboards, TV, print or the web. A layout artist is one who deals with the structure of images and text. A brand Identity designer is the one who creates a visual design of a company's brand identity. Logo designers are in charge of creating corporate logos from scratch.

Due to modern technology and the availability of software used for graphic design such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Flash, more and more jobs in graphic design are required such as Photoshop & Illustrator artists, web designers, and multimedia designers. These designers use traditional media such as photography and combining it with modern photography as well as those new applications for any graphic design requirement.
