When selecting a contractor for a home renovation, don't be tempted to simply take the lowest estimate. There is no guarantee that it will be cheaper to use a lower-cost contractor and simply fix any poor work later. If you are working with a very small (less than eight feet wide) section of kitchen counter space, consider visiting a few local granite dealers in search of remnants. Larger dealers often discard these remnants and only charge a small amount for cutting and installing a small counter top. This is an excellent way to add high style to a small surface, and at a great deal no less.

One valuable home improvement project that could save you money is the installation of ceiling fans. Having a fan in each of your rooms can help keep them cool and allow the air to circulate. If you use the fans instead of air conditioning, your summer energy bill will be much lower.

Paint your floor in sections corresponding with the direction of the planking. When you paint the floor of a large room it is easy to paint yourself into a corner or to unintentionally block access to the rest of the house until the paint dries. If you paint in sections you can leave paths that run along specific boards. When you paint the adjoining section everything will match perfectly.

Look for cracks or shifting of your home's concrete slabs or driveway. Slabs on the exterior should always be positioned so that any drainage that occurs faces away from your home's foundation. Use crack filler to fill in any cracks, or use a silicone caulk. Next, power-wash and then seal.

In northern climates where heavy snow covers the ground all winter, you may lose track of where the borders of pathways are. To avoid this it is a good idea to put a 4' X 4' lumber bordering the paths. Then, when you are shoveling snow, you will know exactly where the edge of the path should be.

When renovating your house it is very important that you cover all surfaces. For example, if you are painting, be sure to cover the floor with tarp. If you are hammering or demolishing walls be sure to cover the floor to prevent unwanted scratches on the surfaces. It is good to protect surfaces to avoid damage.
