However, cars are a necessary form of transportation today and they are not something we can simply decide to get rid of. Generally, high octane fuels are created of high performance cars and should not be used for an everyday average car.
If high octane mixtures are used in an average car it can result in increased carbon buildup in the crankcase and around the spark plugs due to higher engine temperatures. These temperatures can cause serious problems in the air-cooled engine of a typical car.
People that drive average cars are recommended to fill their car with 84-90 octane graded gasoline. They are also discouraged from using gasoline that contains more than 10% alcohol.
To be certain of the best solution, consult the driver's manual of your car or call the manufacturer to discuss the engine's limits in regards to gasoline. If your car is not driven very consistently, remember to keep track of how old the gas in the car is.
Gas that is over 30 days old has consistently lost its volatility over that time. After 30 days, the gasoline is considered unfit and can even damage smaller engines.
As it loses its volatility, the gas breaks down into engine gum, or varnish. This engine gum hinders the engine's ability to process the gas effectively.
In addition, engine varnish causes buildup that can cause engine blockage. In turn, this engine blockage can stop the flow of gas to the engine, which will not allow it to run.
If you know that the gas will be sitting in your car unused for an extended period of time there is a product called a gasoline stabilizer that can lengthen the lifetime of your gasoline. These gas stabilizers can be purchased at any local auto parts store.
A gas stabilize should be mixed with newly purchased gasoline. If it is mixed properly, the gas stabilizer will lengthen the life of the gas.
Before you mix a gas stabilizer with your gas, you may want to do some research to make sure that you purchased the most effective stabilizer for the type of gas that you purchased. In order to maintain the best performance on your car and a clean engine there are several things that you can do.
The first was previously mentioned and discussed. It is to make sure that your car always runs on fresh fuel. Stale or old fuel that has lost its volatility is the most prominent cause of buildup in an engine.
The second is to make sure you store fuel in a clean container in small quantities. The container should also be UV protective, approved to gas storage, and they are usually plastic.
Do not place this container in direct sunlight or in high humidity. Some people prefer metal containers for their gas, but these are susceptible to rust.
This rust can mix with the gas and be harmful to engines. The third step is to make sure the fuel cap is on as much as possible.
If the lid is off of the fuel container much of the time, it will allow air contaminants to mix with the gas. The gas also tends to evaporate with uncovered, not to mention that it could cause a fire.
Likewise, when you do have to take the fuel container lid off for some reason, leave it in a clean place. If it becomes dirty and is replaced on the container it can allow the debris to mix with the fuel.
The fourth step is to make sure the engine air filters are cleaned or changed on a regular basis. The engine manufacturer should be able to provide you with replacement filters should you need them.
It is very important to know about the engine of your car and how to properly take care of it. This will extend the lifetime of your car and help you save a lot of money.
