Martial arts are a way to sculpt and strengthen the body while experiencing an exciting work out. There really is no "best" type when it comes to this activity, but each branch offers different benefits for the body that can be more suited to what you need and which type of exercise you prefer.
It has been around for centuries, and was only recently adapted into a work out; martial arts was originally used as a way to defend oneself in battle and against intruders. It is also viewed as an art form and exhibition sport.

Because of the intensity of the workout and the different strength moves that are used to take down one's opponent, it requires an enormous amount of strength and endurance. Those that want to be successful in the sport should have a good basic weight training routine and should be participating in at least thirty minutes of cardio a day.
Working the heart and helping one's ability to exercise for longer grow is the best way to become a great fighter. Try to spend a half hour on the treadmill a few days a week, and you should notice a difference in your ability to fight for an extended period of time.
Those that are more interested in precision punching and grappling may want to try to more traditional forms of martial arts, like karate, tae kwon do, or kung fu. These are very structured work outs that required the participant to know specific punches and arm and leg positions.
When these different moves are mixed together in grappling or exhibition, they are a beautiful art form. The power and control that is required to perform the specific moves, jabs, and punches requires a different set of muscle than those used in scrappier sports like Jiu Jitsu or kickboxing.
Those involved in kung fu or karate will most likely not build large muscles, but will have a lean and trim body type. Another stand up style that offers a little bit more intensity than these traditional branches is Krav Maga.
The method was developed in Israel and has become the official fighting system of the IDF, or Israeli Defense Force, since the territory became its own state in 1948. It is performed standing, and all other punches and kicks branch out from the original fighting stance.
It requires balance and precision, but also powerful kicks and punches to be successful. Krav Maga is very focused on defensive techniques and how to ward off an attacker that is coming at you.
Therefore, it also requires the use of reflexes and snap judgments. All of these different methods can offer different health benefits.
Some required more sparring than others, while some are used in sport and usually performed for exhibition purposes. If you really want to learn to be a good fighter, you will probably want to find trainers that focus more on the offensive and defensive tactics, rather than the look and proper technique of the moves.
Martial arts builds both cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength; therefore, it is a great form of exercise for almost anyone who wishes to increase their fitness and change their body. Make sure that you are healthy and able to perform the movements and work outs ahead of time; you may find it necessary to build a strong basis of cardio health and tone before attempting any one of these various types.
