Choosing The Best Topics For An Essay

When writing an essay it's critical to choose a great topic

. Quite frankly, your essay is only as good as the topic you select. Without a thought provoking topic, your essay has no reason or logical argument. An essay needs to keep its reader reading, wanting to know both about the essay topic and the reader's thoughts. Without a strong essay topic - the reader's thoughts are simply an opinion.

In choosing an essay topic, begin by reading your professor's directions. Most likely they have made some suggestions or direction for essay topics. It's vital that you follow their instructions so your essay is considered appropriate and is graded well. Take the time to read your professor's instructions for the essay and you may realize they give some direction for either essay topic selection or perhaps topics they would prefer you not to choose. All information is useful for the student.

The best essay topics are ones that make you want to write an essay. Try not to simply choose an essay to complete an assignment, but also because you're curious about something. Your professors will assign essays because they believe this is a learning tool and you will discover something about the class subject. Best of all, the essay is a way for you to often inject your own thoughts into this subject and come up with your own ideas about it in a unique and thought provoking way.

Choose an essay topic that you feel is unique and not quite like every other student. If you're taking a class about Romeo and Juliet, every student will likely write about their romantic relationship and how tragic it was.

Why not write something different?

Look at the story and see what stands out for you as an interesting topic that another student might not select. The parents in Romeo and Juliet were truly characters of their own and caused a lot of the conflict. Writing about them and their role would be an excellent choice and also one which few students would choose.

Try to stay away from "hot button" topics known of your professor's dislike. If your professor is a known objector of war, it would probably be best not to write about this subject. Writing about a "hot button" subject that your professor does not like automatically puts you in an adversary position in most cases.

The most professional and mature professor will simply grade your essay on its own merit, But some professors will get caught up in their own emotions about the "hot button" issue and be tempted to comment about it - which is not fair to you as a student. Keep the focus on the essay and the assignment.

Look to current events for unique essay topics. While "hot button" topics may be off-limits, current events are often not off-limits as essay topics. Current events can be an excellent topic for your essay. Writing about a current event and weaving it into your essay topic is an ideal way to show your knowledge of today's world and strong thinking process. Any professor will be impressed with this skill and ability.

The student who compares the world of yesterday to the world of today will be making an easy comparison but it's not one that every student chooses to make in their essay writing.
