Choosing The Correct Instrument
Choosing a beginning instrument can be a very exciting task
. While the child often helps pick their instrument, his or her parents can often help guide them in a direction to pick an instrument that they will love.
As many musicians have noted, instrumentalists have different personalities that are usually shown through the instrument they choose to play. There are so many different possibilities for your child to choose from including guitar, piano, drums, cello, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn and the list goes on and on.
When helping your child to choose an instrument, be sure to consider what his or her personality is like and what he or she may enjoy. Do not coerce him or her into playing your favorite instrument to listen to as he or she will probably end up not enjoying it very much.
As a result, the poor instrument will end up in the back of a closet and you will never it being well played. The first thing you should consider when looking at your child's personality is whether he or she would enjoy playing alone or with a group.
Some children love being in the spotlight and are not afraid to play solos and take credit for the entire performance, even if he or she messes up. Other personalities prefer to blend in and be part of a team contribution to a masterful piece.
Those who would love to lead the performance and take a lot of solos will usually end up choosing an instrument that allows them to take the melody instead of a supporting line. These kinds of instruments are typically the violin, flute, trumpet or piano.
Those who prefer to support these leading instruments may prefer to learn the viola, cello, bass, clarinet or guitar. Both types of personalities are needed in a band.
The second thing you should think about is whether your child prefers to be the leader or the follower. Those who like to lead will tend to prefer more unique instruments as they break off from the more traditional standards.
Meanwhile, those who prefer to be a follower will tend to choose an instrument that is more common and typical. Those who like to lead will likely choose instruments that exhibit their background culture or country and will overlook the typical trumpet or flute.
The children who like to follow will predictable choose the trumpet, flute and so forth. Again, both kinds of instrumentalists are needed to fill out a band.
The third thing you will want to consider is whether your child has a loud personality or a very calm, quiet and relaxed one. If your child is very energetic and loud, your child will also like loud instruments such as brass, drums, and electric guitars with amplifiers.
On the other hand, if your child is quiet and laid back, he or she will prefer a quiet or laid back instrument. They may choose a harp, oboe, Native American flute and so forth.
The fourth thing to consider is whether you child will prefer to play classical music or folk music. Some children like to follow rules that are set for them while other children prefer to set their own rules.
The children who prefer to follow rules that are set for them, will probably prefer to read sheet music and play the strict classical music. Meanwhile, those who set their own rules will enjoy the freedom of the music that allows them to experiment and play impromptu.
The last thing you will want to think about is how expensive the instrument is. Even if you let your child choose whatever instrument he or she wants in the other categories, this is probably the category that you will have a vested interest in as you are the one who will probably end up paying for the instrument.
The trick with choosing an instrument in the end, is finding one that is good enough quality that it will be enjoyable to play while keeping it under a certain price. Money may not be an issue for some people, but for the vast majority of others it is.
Sometimes you will be able to find an instrument in excellent condition that is a cheap price at used instrument shops, in the classifieds, or online through sites such as Craig's List.
By considering all of these things carefully and letting your child have a say in which instrument he or she wants to play, the correct choice will be made. In the years to come your home may filled with beautiful music.
