A rectangular table is good for larger families, while a round table is best for families with 4-6 members.
You also will want to think about whether the table is going into a breakfast nook, an informal dining room or a formal dining room. For an informal dining room, consider matching the table closely to your kitchen dcor. Since informal dining rooms are often linked to the kitchen, the wood finish on the table and chairs should compliment the kitchen. Style, such as country or contemporary should be consistent in both rooms, as well as, the style of the linens.

You don't want to buy a beautiful set that doesn't fit in the allocated space. Make sure you measure the area where you'll be placing your gathering table set beforehand and look at only sets that will fit within that area.
Finally, that addition to the armrests, some dining chairs are fancy and decorated. These may have sweeping curves and corners, cabriole legs. There are a number of decorative accents that can make chairs stand out. But all of those accents are going to take up even more space around your dining table.
