Ethernet cables are used to create networks of computers and other devices and connect to the internet

. This allows them to share information quickly and easily and also means they can all use the same peripheral gadgets without any extra wires.

They are not as complicated as they sound and are easy to use, meaning even the most non-technologically minded of home computing users can set up a network and connect their devices.

Different types of Ethernet cable

Not all Ethernet cables are the same and there are a range of leads in different qualities and lengths.

The different types of Ethernet cables are described by their category, or cat.

Cat 3 are great for voice communications and transfer speeds of up to 10Mbps and even these bottom-end Ethernet cables will be more than enough for home networking.

Further up the scale, cat 5 leads can handle around 100Mbps and are thinner. Cat 5e Ethernet cables are used in the telecommunications industry and cat 6 are great for when networks are running close to capacity in high-demand environments.

Ethernet cables also vary in the way they are made. Solid core leads are the preferred option for longer lengths as they are less flexible so do not get bent or twisted, which can lead to information loss. These types of cable are actually cheaper as well because they are easier to manufacture. Stranded cables are less suitable for high-demand and speed-dependent uses, but are fine for home networks and when smaller lengths are needed.

When it comes to length, Ethernet cables are available in up to 100ft, so devices can be connected between rooms without information loss or compromising speed of transmission.

Stepping up networking options with Ethernet cable splitters

A splitter can be used with a Network cable to make the most of the high-speed, great quality connectivity they offer without creating a mess of wires. They allow the connection to be shared while reducing the amount of cable needed.

Ethernet splitters must be used in pairs - one at each end of the two devices being connected. This allows the signal from the first to be merged into the cable for transmission and then reconfigured into usable data at the other end. They make the most of the unused wires inside Ethernet cables and are ideal for networking and connecting peripheral devices.
