Choosing The Right Interior Designer
If you are planning on getting your hands dirty by doing some of the painting and
decorating yourself or you may have a fabric expert friend who can help out to save you some money, then hiring an interior designer may not be a wise choice. Having said that, you are reading this article and you've obviously decided on hiring an interior designer so lets move onto the points to consider when deciding on which designer to hire for your project.
The first question to ask is the design company's involvement in your entire project. I know I explained in my first paragraph that interior designers will take care of the whole project from start to finish but you need to hear it from themselves. For example some may not provide you with design concepts and they may just take your ideas and turn them into reality without expert advice and feedback.
Therefore, be sure of what exactly you will be getting for your money from the company and that there won't be any surprises half way through the project.
Once you've established their involvment with your project you can start to discuss their work. It's beneficial to ask for portfolios, their previous work, the work that they are most proud of and so on. It's also good to see completed projects with various budgets because this will give you a good idea of how they work and what results they achieve from smaller budgets compared to larger ones. This stage will also help you understand the design ideas and styles of the designers so that you can visualise how to incorporate their styles into your own ideas to end up with a final finish that both parties will be happy with. You cannot hold yourself back at this stage. You need to fire questions at them to find out as much as you can about their work.
You can then move onto discussing your ideas, your personality and your style. Experienced interior designers will be able to connect with their clients and understand them so that they can illustrate their personality within the concept designs, ideas and plans. Talking to the designers and discussing initial ideas with them will give you good insight into how adaptable they are. Some designers can have tunnel vision and tend to stick to one style so it's good to put them to the test and see how well they can work outside of their comfort zone.
If you have made it this far and you are happy with the designer or the design firm that they represent then it will be time to start discussing costs. The fees involved with the project are essential information to agree upon before any kind of work starts. You need to get down to the nitty and gritty and do not leave anything out! The last thing you want is nasty bills popping up out of the blue during the project. You want to also discuss the time frame and set deadlines. Nobody wants a project to drag on and on so make sure the time period agreed is going to be suitable for both parties. You want to be careful when setting deadlines though because setting it too early may mean that your designer will have to rush to get the job done. Set it where both you and your designer will be comfortable.
The thing to remember is that you must not be afraid or embarassed to ask questions and provide your opinions and ideas. Afterall it is you, that's paying for the service and it is your room or your office in which you will be spending most of your days. Being demanding is not a bad thing as long it is reasonable. If you don't give feedback, put in your thoughts and don't provide reasonable demands then your laid back approach can geet transferred onto your designer and you may end up getting a sloppy job.
