Hammer mills have a high speed rotating steel hammer. The bottom of the container holding the sample that is being ground is a sieve. This sieve allows the already ground up portion of the sample to leave the grinding chamber. Hammer mills usually grind fine samples.

Ball Mills

The newest laboratory mills are ball mills and operate with just one bowl and are based on the principal of laboratory ball mills. They have very high performance despite being designed to be used in a very small space. The grinding chamber is cooled by built in fans which allows for longer grinding time than older laboratory mills allowed.

When choosing a laboratory mill there are several things that needs to be considered. Of course the first thing you need to decide is whether you intend to use a disc or hammer mill. Then you need to determine the size of the size sample you will be putting in the grinder, how big the feeder needs to be and the speed of rotations. What you need for each of these areas will determine the size and style of laboratory mill your industry laboratory needs.

Specialized Mills

Specialized mills may be of the hammer, disc, or ball variety depending upon their use. Micro laboratory mills are designed for extremely small samples that range from 20 to 50 ML while Universal mills are designed to grind both wet and dry grinding of materials consisting of various hardness.
