Choosing out the right fishing lures can be extremely confusing as there are many different brands, styles, colors and sizes to choose from. However, this can also be what makes selecting your lures fun. Here is what you will need to know when choosing which lures so that you can be sure that you are selecting the lures that are right for you.
Fishing Jigs
These lures are characteristic by their metal heads and tails that are usually crafted from animal hair or feathers. Fishermen will sometimes add some pork rind or a minnow to the hook as well. They are used to catch a variety of saltwater fish and any kind of freshwater fish.
Poppers
These are smaller lures that are used along with your spin casting gear. They are perfect when fishing for pan fish or other surface feeding fish like bass or trout. Poppers are characterized by their cupped face that is either molded or carved into the front part of the body of the lure.
Spoons
These are lures that are made of metal and intended to duplicate the look of a small baitfish swimming. These lures are extremely popular due to their versatility and how easy they are to use. You will need to have the kind of spoon that is particular to the kind of fishing that you will be doing since spoons will have differing actions.
Plugs
Plugs typically have either a wood or a plastic body that is made to be fished on the surface of the water or just below it. Floating or topwater versions of these lures are created so that they will float on top of the water. Plugs that dive will have either metal or plastic lips that will enable them to plunge to certain depths. The plugs that dive are considered crankbaits and are usually operated with bait casting reels.
Spinners
Spinner baits will have blades attached to them that either revolve or spin around a wire shaft. Some will be crafted with tails similar to jigs.
Plastic Baits
Plastic baits such as minnows, worms or crayfish come in a variety of colors and sizes. You can operate these lures either with a weight or without. Many times, plastic baits are used in addition to a spinner, jig head or spinner bait. Some of these lures also come with scents manufactured into them that are designed to attract fish.
