Choosing Your Kitties Litter Box
Choosing a litter box is an important decision for your cat in order for them to live happily in your household
. Ideally you should have 1 litter box for each cat in the household. Kittens should use shallower litter boxes while bigger cats should use deeper ones. Here are some of the litter boxes available for your cat.
Basic Flat Box - These are the cheapest litter boxes for your cat. The flats boxes come in many different sizes, depths and colors. They are generally very easy to clean and actually preferred by many cats.
Covered Box- This would be our number one pick in litter boxes. The covered boxes have a top that covers them and gives your cat a secure private potty area. An opening at one end allows your cat to go in and out of. A swinging door is featured on some covered boxes, but we usually takes these off in order to keep our cat from feeling trapped and confined in their own litter box. Make sure your cats litter box is big enough for them to turn around in and stand up straight. These litter boxes are especially recommended for cats that spray.
Self Cleaning Boxes - Several manufactures have designed litter boxes with motion activated "self cleaning" litter boxes. After your cat leaves the box, a sensor is activated that triggers a rake that scoops the matter into a receptacle which can then manually be emptied every couple of days. You may need to experiments with the scoopable litter the works best with these boxes. Some cats don't like the mechanical action. Be sure to check into the guarantee before purchasing.
Sifting Boxes - The basic sifter box is made up of two rectangular pans and a "sifter tray". The two boxes stack on top of each other with the sifting tray inside the top pan. To clean the box you simply separate the two litter boxes and lift the sifting tray out which removes the waste but leaves the litter. The sifter is then put into the empty box and you pour the litter on top. After the waste is dumped, you put the empty litter box on the bottom.
