Choosing Your Rental Car

So, you've got your rate and you like it, all your questions have been answered and

you decide you want the Ford Focus, mainly because you have one (or want one) and know exactly what the car is and will do. Then when you pick up the car you get given something other than the Focus! What can you do? Well, nothing really, because somewhere you will find a phrase like 'or similar' referring to the make and model of the car you are actually given on loan.

Car rental companies will never guarantee you the make and model only the group. What does it mean? Well think about this, as a car rental company, you have eight Ford Focuses on fleet in 'small town' and you have two Peugeot 206's plus a Citroen Xsara. So, in all your promotional material whether printed or on the web you use the Focus as the 'typical' vehicle in a group. If all are rented out it's impossible for everyone to have the Focus. Plus, even though not all cars are rented out, all the Focuses are and one is brought back late. You can see why no rental company will guarantee a make or model!

So, you should make your choice based on the group, Economy, Compact, Intermediate, or size designation will suit your purposes. Decide whether you want aircon, or automatic transmission. Book the car based on group and you will have less problems!

While it is true that if you base your choice on the group there is likely to be less confusion for you, there are still possibilities for upsets. Take for example a situation where there are two families going on holiday together, making in all a total of seven passengers and you order a seven seat minivan. When you get to your destination, you pick up the car and all pile in, only to find at three am there are no other car rental desks open and the company you've booked with do not have any other vehicles available for you! The problem is, a seven seater will carry seven adults, that's what it's built for, but not the total luggage for seven adults, especially if they have things like ski's or golf clubs, or even two cases each!

So, think about renting another car for the first and last days so you can get all of the luggage in! This goes for any size car, if at home you and your family will normally fit into a Ford Ka, try putting all the cases in and see how it all fits, then remember that the Ka is one of the smallest groups and think about whether it will hold everything on the way back from the airport! It is common to end up with at least another small case or bag for all the souvenirs acquired!
