. A security camera monitor can come in many different forms, whether it is simply just a VHS recorder attached to a camera or a remote computer system tied in to your security system through a dedicated IP tunnel. These factors will determine what security camera monitor will work best for you.

Choosing Your Security Camera Monitor

There are basically two types of security camera monitors - analog and digital. An analog system will connect up to the camera directly and monitor, or a digital recording system on a PC with remote monitoring capabilities. Each has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Analog has the advantage that it can not as easily be corrupted or damaged. Tapes are fairly resistant to damage and need to be taken directly from the system. Also they are cheap and very interchangeable so that you can record pretty much everything happening directly to tape. The monitoring of this system is straight forward. Usually it is just a TV hooked up to VCR so that you can watch what is going on. Analog systems are generally less expensive than digital ones, however they lack the versatility.

Most analog systems can not be networked or remotely monitored. The monitoring unit is generally right with the taping unit and can not be networked with other cameras. The ratio is generally one TV per camera, although in some cases one monitor can cover multiple cameras.

Digital units are usually more responsive and can be monitored remotely from a laptop or other PC system. In addition from one location you can generally keep an eye on multiple cameras. You can also have a significant amount of control over your systems from your remote location by going digital.

The drawbacks are that generally digital systems are less reliable and it is more difficult to offload the information. The actual security camera monitor is very similar however, aside from the fact that it is much easier to network digital systems.

For both analog and digital systems you will need some kind of security camera monitor. In each of these systems the actual monitor is usually very similar but the actual function of the system is very different. Carefully decide which system you want as it is nearly impossible to switch from one to the other without fully replacing the entire system. In addition, you can run both systems together although this will be more expensive than one system on its own.
