Choosing a Marketing Company
Starting a new business requires a lot of gumption and definitely a good business idea. Marketing or selling to your potential customers also requires proficiency, if not expertise, in marketing skills. These skills are not in born and are often not taught to individuals who majored in engineering, arts, political science, or economics. Business entrepreneurs without sufficient marketing knowledge or experience should hire the services of professional marketing companies.
There are thousands of professional marketing companies to choose from. And since these companies earn their bread and butter through marketing, their sales brochures, websites, and glib talk can often be misleading. It is crucial to test the veracity of their claims and follow specific guidelines to be able to sift the grain from the husk.
To begin with, one must expect the professional marketing consultant to fully comprehend the entrepreneur's business idea. If a marketer fails to understand the core business proposition, it is unlikely that the marketer can help you reach your target customers.
However, this does not mean that the entrepreneur should expect a professional marketing consultant to understand the marketing idea in a single elevator pitch. The entrepreneur should allow room for follow-up questions to help the consultant gain clarity about the business proposition. If the consultant does not ask any follow-up questions, but fails to explain the business idea back to the entrepreneur, the entrepreneur should immediately start looking for a different marketing consultant.
The marketing consultant should also have a clear idea about the targeted niche of customers and be well versed in the beliefs, motivations, and buying habits of that demographic. If a consultant has not previously sold anything to such customers, the entrepreneur may end up placing a wrong bet by hiring that marketing consultant.
Getting an idea of whom and what the marketer has previously worked with will give you an idea of what they are capable of. Leafing through previous work will inform you of whether they specialize in a particular type of marketing, which may or may not suit your business. Gut feelings can be important here, and if the marketing company appears incongruent with your business, then it may not be the best choice.
It is a good practice to hire those marketing consultants that appear to be as passionate about the success of the business venture, as the entrepreneur himself. Such passion can establish a win-win partnership.
