Choosing the Right Mobility Lift for Your Vehicle

Choosing the Right Mobility Lift for Your Vehicle

There are numerous mobility lifts for vehicles currently on the market. If you have decided to install a mobility lift on your vehicle, it will pay off to be aware of the different types available, and what the advantages of each are. There are four basic categories to choose from: the ramp, inside lift, outside lift, and the more contemporary hybrid lift.

The most traditional and basic way to get a scooter or wheelchair into a vehicle is with a ramp. These days, ramps are lighter weight while not compromising on strength. In this way, they are far more transportable than in the past. Ramps are typically less expensive than any other type of mobility lift. However, such lifts depend on the assistance of a second person.

Inside lifts are usually used with larger vehicles, such as vans or SUVs, but can also be used with vehicles that have large trunks for storage. This type of lift allows wheelchairs or scooters to be stored inside the vehicle or trunk. Typically, this type of gear is engineered with a swinging arm that fastens itself to the wheelchair or scooter, and then lifts it into the vehicle.

As the name suggests, outside lifts are mounted on the outside of a vehicle. They are secured to a hitch on the rear of a car, van, SUV, or motor home. Depending on what you use, outside lift platforms come in a variety of sizes.

For those with vans or SUVs, hybrid lifts have proven to be the most convenient type of lift. It allows a person to drive their wheelchair or scooter directly onto a platform that is then lifted into the vehicle. This can be done without the disabled person having to get out of their wheelchair or scooter. Such devices are larger in size than the other types of lifts, and so must be used on the back of an SUV or on the side doors of a van. Minivans with hybrid lifts are one of the most popular mobility vehicles now on the market.

If you already have a vehicle that you are planning on converting to include mobility features, you'll have a variety of lifts to choose from depending on your individual needs and budget. Keep in mind that there are vehicles on the market, new and used, that can be purchased with mobility lifts already incorporated into them.
