Chose Your Keywords and Keyphrases Carefully

The importance of chosing the right keywords and keyphrases cannot be stressed enough! The impact on your website and business is enourmous

. Keywords and keyphrases are the main factors in where your website or blog ranks when it comes to placement on a search engine. This can mean the difference between success and failure. My estimate is that 80% of the Internet businesses fail due to not using the right keywords and keyphrases to drive traffic to their website. Without traffic there will be no sales. Let me give you some examples of the impact keywords and keyphrases have.

Note:

A keyword niche is a group of keywords containing one seed keyword phrase. For example, the chocolate donut keyword niche includes keywords containing chocolate donut - like chocolate glazed donuts and chocolate filled donut.

Suppose you have two women who are about to get married. We will call them Sarah and Barbera. First of all they would both fit in to the category or keywordniche " wedding dress". Both are shopping on-line for wedding dresses. Sarah types in the keyphrase " wedding dress types" while Barbera types in " wedding dress prices". If you were operating a business that sells wedding supplies and this included wedding dresses and advertised that you were selling wedding supplies, neither Sarah nor Barbera would find you in their search. Although your niche is selling wedding supplies if you are going to attract buyers for your dresses you will have to advertise by being more specific as to what you are selling. Now let's get back to the keyphrases that Sarah and Barbera entered in their search.

Both ladies would come up with completely different results in their search. If you are online right now do a search in any search engine using the keyphrases that the ladies used and you will see for yourself that you will get two different results. Do you see the importance of chosing your keywords carefully?

You have to analyze your business carefully and think of all the keywords that relate to your company or product. You also need to consider who will be needing your product. The more specific your keywords are, the better the chance that people who find your site through search engines will actually benefit from its content.

There are some great tools available to help you find the best keywords and phrases related to your business. These tools can help you narrow down the most popular words and phrases searched on the Internet. A word of caution here! Do not spam! Be careful choosing keywords. If all your keywords don't relate to your site's content you risk being penalized for spam. Don't include "MP3" and "Pokemon" in your keyword list if you sell puppy food. Sure, it will drive up traffic temporarily, but it can also get your site rejected from important search engines.

Include variations of keywords. Include misspelled words, capitalized and plural keywords. Avoid using "and, the and common words like Internet" These are called stop words. Using more specific words will increase your chances of being ranked higher so people will find your site.

In addition to looking up search engines for what keywords you think are important also take the time to ask past customers how they found you, why they chose you, and what issues were important to them in chosing you. You can also get keyword ideas by doing things like checking your web analytics or server logs, looking at page contents of competing websites, looking through topical forums and community sites to see what issues people frequently discuss.

This article only touches briefly on the importance of keywords and phrases and how they affect your ability to attract visitors to your site. I can go on about this topic for hours and we would still have lots to cover. Bottom line is you must learn as much as you can by doing research on keywords and optimizing your website for the best returns. If you are fortunate enough to have the money to hire a professional or take a course in SEO, this would greatly enhance the viability of your website to make money on-line.

These are some of the tools and sites available to help you with chosing words and phrases for your website and/or blog. There are many more however I chose to ad these three to my article as I know these the best and use them myself. I hope you find them useful.
