Christian Drug Rehab: A Blessing in Disguise

Christian Drug Rehab: A Blessing in Disguise

At first glance, one might think that "Christian Drug Rehab" is an oxymoron or contradiction of terms. Religion and drugs are not generally considered to be compatible with one another. Most if not all traditional forms of religion forbade or consider the use of drugs and alcohol as a sin or a sign that the user or abuser lacks religious belief and conviction. Those who are strong in faith have the willpower to overcome the temptation or temporary pleasures provided by the use of drugs and alcohol. Therefore, they do not need secular forms of treatment such as drug rehabilitation services as long as they follow the tenets and beliefs of their religion.

The relationship between religion and drug and alcohol use is a complex subject that has as long a history as civilization itself. In general most research on this subject tends to show an inverse relationship between drug use and religious adherence. In other words, the more someone professes religious conviction the less likely they are to use drugs or alcohol to excess or to the point of creating problems in their life.

The belief in a higher power or having deep spiritual convictions does appear to be a powerful factor to prevent and overcome addiction to drugs and alcohol. In fact one of the most successful methods of achieving sobriety in use today is the 12-step method which has as its central tenet the belief in higher power that is needed to help the addict or alcoholic rise above their need for drugs and alcohol to lead a healthy, happy life. As in an excerpt from the 12 Steps: Step 1 - We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable, Step 2 - Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity, Step 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God Step 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

But therein lies the rub. Is it possible that those in need of treatment for drug and alcohol problems do not seek help because of their religious beliefs but yet need religious beliefs to help them overcome addictions? Certainly based on a sin-guilt-punishment view of drug addiction this may be true, but therein lies the beauty of Christian-based Drug Rehab. It combines the use and renewal of deep spiritual and religious beliefs and practices in a forgiving, therapeutic environment free of guilt or fear for the purpose of overcoming dependence to drugs and alcohol. Christian Drug Rehab is really saying "its okay we understand" that you are human and have weaknesses but let us help you draw from the strengths of your religious and spiritual beliefs so that you can become a better person and lead a more productive, fulfilling life.
