Christian Songs Have Seen Many Changes

Through the years Christian music has seen many changes

. Christian contemporary music is generally considered to have originated in the late sixties during the Jesus movement. Larry Norman was an early pioneer in the genre. During this period there were also a few mainstream bands that started performing Christian songs. Some of these songs even charted on mainstream charts. One in particular was from the band Ocean.

Put Your Hand in the Hand was a very good God song. It really became popular among a broad audience. There was however unforeseen blowback from fellow Christians. They feared that these bands were not capable of delivering the message in a good way. Fortunately the detractors were not victorius. Christian music started to gain momentum.

The poser effect started to take hold in Christian music. Christian songs were being released by bands that were not talented enough for mainstream. The demand was high, unfortunately the supply of talented Christian artists was lacking. Because of the demand they released Christian music that was very lacking in quality. I'm not sure if those bands were interested in actually delivering Christ's message or it was just the only way someone would let them record an album. Only God and the actual artists know that.

It was only a matter of time until true talent started to outnumber the posers in Christian music.. Artists that were Christians started to embrace their beliefs. The Christian songs that started being produced were of a much better quality. Petra a Christian band that was an early pioneer in the genre was formed in the early seventies. Petra was an influential band that essentially set the bar for musicians to come. The eighties saw a great increase in popularity for Petra

Petra's popularity continued into the 90's. More styles of music started being incorporated into Christian music. For just about every style of music there was a counterpart in Christian music. The genre was finally filled with true talents.

The expansion of Christian music as genre was probably greatest in the nineties. These artists were able to adapt and grow with mainstream trends. The Christian rappers such as T-Bone even had an answer for gangsta rap. These days Christian music is a well established music genre. It is no longer a step behind mainstream music. As trends in music change the genre stays in pace.

It is not uncommon to see an album from a band like Jars of Clay debut on the mainstream charts. Christian songs are regularly featured in films and T.V. The people who oppose Christian music will never go away completely. It is my hope that this will not keep people from exploring this very diverse music genre.
