Christian Songs a Brief History

Through the years Christian music has seen many changes

. Most will tell you that modern Christian music was born of the Jesus movement. Larry Norman was an early pioneer in the genre. There was also a mainstream movement during the sixties that got the message out there. Some of these songs even charted on mainstream charts. One in particular was from the band Ocean.

"Put Your Hand in the Hand" was a very good God song. It really became popular among a broad audience. There was however unforeseen blowback from fellow Christians. There was a belief in the community that "Rock Stars" could not deliver the message in an appropriate way. The resistance could not overpower the will of the people. Christian music started to gain momentum.

As with any new genre Christian music fell victim to the bandwagon effect. Artists with very little talent were suddenly releasing Christian songs. This was due to a lack of talented artists willing to release Christian music. There was a major demand for this new music. In a move of desperation the record companies chose to release music that was not of the greatest quality. I'm not sure if those bands were interested in actually delivering Christ's message or it was just the only way someone would let them record an album. That is between the artists themselves and God.

It was only a matter of time until real talent started to emerge in Christian music. Many emerging artists finally felt free to proclaim their beliefs, without fear of being ridiculed. The Christian songs that started being produced were of a much better quality. In 1972 a Christian band called Petra was formed. Petra changed the face of Christian music, they were and still are an influence on many Christian artists. Their popularity really peaked in the eighties.

Petra's popularity continued into the 90's. Other styles of Christian music began to emerge. There was a Christian counterpart for pretty much any style of music. The genre was finally filled with true talents.

Christian music perhaps saw its greatest growth during the 90's. DC Talk was huge in the nineties. They were able to adapt with time. I think most people still know the name tobyMac. With the popularity of gangsta rap Christian rappers like T-Bone offered Christian alternatives. Christian music has stood the test of time. It is no longer a step behind mainstream music. There are some Christian musicians who are even setting the trends themselves.

It is not uncommon to see an album from a band like Jars of Clay debut on the mainstream charts. You will find these Christian songs in feature films and television. There will always be naysayers. Hopefully this will not discourage people from enjoying this fabulous music.
