Christmas And Its Origins

Christmas without gifts and fun would not be Christmas

. It is the time of the year when people get all the freedom to indulge in enjoyment and give each other gifts as well as wish each other with cards. It has not been the way of celebration what has generally been seen by all. People in the earlier times would write on cards made by them and sent to their loved ones since there were no greeting cards commercially created or sold then. Many things like paper, wood, linen would be utilized for the creation of greeting items to be given at the time of holidays. These used to be done most of the times for wishing New Year instead of Christmas. School going kids would create cards on their own to wish New Year to their fellow mates. They would decorate the cards with lovely pictures and wrote their personal messages in the cards to be given to their friends and family. Large paper sheets were brought into use with elaborate border decoration on the edges in order to give a real fancy look to the creations.

During this era, the trend of sets with matching envelops and designer paper also gained quite a lot of popularity. It was in the year 1843 that the Christmas holidays got something new to see, the first few copies of printed cards that were meant for this occasion. Since it was quite tiring to create so many cards for all, Sir Henry Cole decided to take help of his artist friend for the dilemma he was in. John Calcott Horsley, Sir Henrys friend created elegant designs for greeting cards and said that those needed to be created in thousands. Subsequently copies of the card in thousands were printed. Therefore those were the first commercially made cards. Thence the trend of such cards took up quickly and many were decorated with glitters. In 1875, Louis Prang initiated printing of traditional Christmas cards to be made available in the U.S. which people bought to wish each other.
