Christmas In The Lake District
There are lots of things to do and see in the Lake District during December and not
all of it involves climbing mountains or entertaining children! Weekdays tend to be quiet but there is lots of entertainment over the weekends in the run up to Christmas.
Starting from Ravenglass Station, enjoy a magical journey on the Santa Express on weekends during December (more frequent service during the school holidays). The Eskdale Valley looks enchanting in the snow and you can sit back and enjoy the journey from the comfort of the carriages.
Kendal Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair runs until Sunday 16th December at the Westmorland Shopping Centre in Kendal. You can grab some last minute gifts from the Artisan producers selling ceramics, decorative glass, woodwork, textiles and leather good.
Ullswater Steamers are running a spirit of Christmas cruise and Christmas lunch at Dalemain. There has been quite a bit of snow on the Hellvellyn range, which will make for a stunningly scenic cruise followed by lunch at the grand house at Dalemain.
In December the final Lakeland Trail run of the season takes place the Sticky Chocolate 10km & 5km start from Cartmel Racecourse, with Cartmell being the home of the famous sticky toffee pudding! The event rounds off the Trail season and there will be a festive Trails & Ales Party after the race.
Over in the Eden Valley, a Christmas Craft Fare takes place in Kirkby Stephen at the Masonic Hall on the weekends prior to Christmas. On sale will be wooden crafts, mirrors, chalkboards, chocolate treats, jewellery etc. Perfect for last minute gifts!
The English Philharmonic Ensemble perform at St Cuthberts Church in Carlisle during December. The popular candlelit concerts are in their twelfth year now and they are understandably popular. Mulled wine & mince pies are on offer during the interval.
Muncaster Castle is running time traveller tours, allowing you to return to Christmas 1885 and experience the magic of this beautiful, ancient castle, lit by candle light and elegantly decorated for Christmas. While Lord Muncaster sleeps, sneak a peek behind the scenes with his butler and maids. Warm yourself with a glass of mulled wine, mince pie and log fires at his Lordships grand dining table while enjoying festive entertainments with the servants.
Once the children have broken up from School, the Santa Steam Train starts running at Threlkeld Quarry. It is a wonderful journey up through the quarries but bitterly cold so wrap up warm. Afterwards you all pile into the grotto complete with wood burning stove, mince pies and mulled wine or hot chocolate. Santa will be on hand to give out small gifts to the children and the museum will be open for a look round.
On Boxing Day the traditional hunt no longer takes place, but the Blencathra Hunt Master still brings his hounds through the centre of Keswick. They call in at various pubs in the town and the Queens hotel provides complimentary mulled wine. There is a lovely atmosphere and its free so why not wander down for a look.
There are several cottages in the Lake District which would make a fantastic base from which to explore these wonderful events.
Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year and its not just for the mince pies, mulled wine and presents that are on offer its the whole atmosphere. The Lake District is a friendly place at the best of times but during the festive season it goes up a notch and dont be surprised to find yourself invited into someones home for a little drink and a bit of good cheer if you happen to be staying in one of the many Lake District cottages around the areaoooh and watch out for the mistletoe carriers!
