No loneliness is sadder than that which occurs around Christmas time

Holiday loneliness can be one of the most distressing and downright depressing conditions you will ever have to face, and few people can bear its full weight without considerable emotional or mental stress. Loneliness is always a depressing condition to be in to be sure, but it is even more devastating when it occurs during the holidays. When all you see around you are people laughing and having a good time while spreading Christmas cheer with friends and family, the sense of isolation and loneliness that you feel may become quite unbearable.

For some people, what would normally be a period of joy and laughter could be one of the darkest they will have to face. Although Christmas is most often spent in the company of friends and loved ones, not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to spend Christmas in the company of people they love. People who work in other cities, military personnel away on assignment, law enforcement personal, and those involved in essential service may find themselves with no choice but to spend Christmas alone, and the holiday loneliness can easily become unbearable.

When coupled with an already depressed state of mind, Christmas loneliness becomes even more distressing. Even if the person is accustomed to long periods of loneliness, the frenzied activity that surrounds him during Christmastime may trigger a renewed period of anxiety and depression, and trigger even deeper feelings of isolation and loneliness. In fact, statistics have shown that incidents of suicide tend to rise around the holidays, which seems to indicate the severity and extent of loneliness when placed in the setting of what would normally be a joyous occasion.

If you know of anyone who might be suffering from holiday loneliness or is likely to fall prey to it, you should definitely do everything you can to be of some assistance. It doesn't really take too much effort and planning on your part, particularly if you are already making plans for the holidays. One more place at the dinner table is not a big deal for the host, and you may just be able to help someone avoid the crushing feeling of isolation that Christmas loneliness can bring.

You might also want to look into the welfare of your elderly family members. Given the frenzied pace of life nowadays, it is way too easy to overlook the emotional needs of the elderly. Christmas loneliness is a particularly tragic occurrence for the elderly and only a little of your time and effort is necessary to help them cope during this most difficult period.

One other thing you could do is to volunteer some of your time to a local orphanage charity or retirement home. Such establishments typically hold special events around Christmas, and they are always in need of some help. By pitching in and doing your part to help prevent Christmas loneliness from taking over in other people's lives, you just may be able to enjoy a more meaningful holiday season.
