Christmas Markets In Rome

Christmas time is nearly here and the squares of the main Italian cities begin to

get crowded with people and with the traditional Christmas markets.

Christmas markets in Navona Square are without a doubt an important attraction which brings every year millions of tourists in Rome and in particular, in the beautiful and shining markets in piazza Navona, which during Christmas time represent a surplus value for the Eternal City. These kind of folkloristic events took place for the first time in 1434 in Dresden, city in Eastern Germany; their original name was Striezelmarkt, which means Striezel market- a typical German cake. After Luther protestant reform they were renamed Christkindlmarkt and during the years they spread in Northern Italy- maintaining the features typical of the German markets for some time and then changing gradually to the modern Italian markets, which have peculiar features.

In Rome, Christmas markets are a real light, which illuminates the streets of the centre and the main squares of the city, creating new scenarios- in continuous metamorphosis. This year the markets in Navona Square will take place from December until Epiphany 2013; they will be made of stands full of toys, landscapes and statuettes for cribs, decorations for the Christmas tree, Christmas cakes and Italian gastronomic specialties.

2012 Christmas markets will be also an event for the people that love music: the City of Rome organized for this year also some musical events in dei Coronari street, dellOrso street and in Sant Eustachio: there will be mandolin concerts, gospel exhibitions and ethnic music; there will be also a toys show and a cribs show. The tourists who will visit Rome during Christmas time will have the opportunity to listen the stories of a wandering minstrel, who will walk in the main city streets, telling interesting anecdotes about the city.

The tourists who will be in Rome in the period December- January 2013 will then see an original union between the majestic old streets of the city- which represents the history and the ancient times- and the folklore, the music, the human warmth and the Italian culinary specialties. One could not miss the local culinary specialties, on sale in the markets: there will be roast chestnuts, vin brul (winter typical hot wine) and hot chocolate, but also local cakes, sweets and pancakes.

Christmas markets are also the occasion to visit the Roman and the Vatican museums, which will be open to the public for nearly the entire Christmas holidays, to give the possibility for tourists to enjoy both aspects of the city during Christmas time: both the folkloristic one and the cultural one.
