Everybody has heard of yeast infection at least once in their lifetime through advertisements

, friends and family, or even life experiences. As you may know, the symptoms that accompany this disease may not be deadly, but unbearable and frustrating. Some may be diagnosed with every symptom associated with this infection while some may be less severe. Those who have the majority of the symptoms might be diagnosed with chronic yeast infection.

But how does the term chronic yeast infection come into play?

There are two terms that distinguish a yeast infection, which is acute or chronic. Acute is when the disease is treated successfully upon the acknowledgment of the symptoms. When the infection is considered chronic, it is recurring consistently even after treatment and symptoms change over time making it very difficult to treat.

Causes of Chronic Yeast Infection

In the human body there is naturally occurring yeast called Candida albicans. There is no way of getting rid of Candida albicans but it is kept in balance by the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus which is also found naturally in the human body. Chronic yeast infections occurs when the balance between the yeast and bacteria are uneven. When the balance is unstable, the amount of yeast growing will multiply quickly. This is usually caused when you take certain antibiotics or when the pH levels in the body changes. Some antibiotics destroy all bacteria in your system including the ones that keep the yeast in your body in check. Once the balance is thrown off, the yeast starts to multiply rapidly, and before you know it, you have developed a chronic yeast infection.

A chronic yeast infection can also be caused by sugar levels in the body. People with a high blood sugar level, such as diabetics, are more susceptible to getting the infection because yeast feeds off of sugar. Therefore people with an elevated amount of sugar in their systems are more than likely to get infected.

So now that you know the causes of the infection, how will know you know if you actually have it?

Symptoms of Chronic Yeast Infection

The commonly know symptoms are:

- Itching around the genital area

- Vaginal discharge comes out white and possibly thick in texture

- A slight burning sensation when urinating

- Redness or swelling on the skin

- Pain during sexual intercourse

After understanding the basics behind yeast infections, you can now determine if you have the disease by identifying yourself with the related symptoms. If you experience any of the symptoms, it is best to look for a treatment early on before it becomes chronic and difficult to eliminate.
