Chulalongkorn Day Celebrations, A Tribute To A Great Leader

Chulalongkorn Day - or as the people of Thailand say

, Piyamaharaj Day - is an occasion of great significance in Thailand. Falling on October 23rd it is the death anniversary of one of Thailands most renowned and venerated kings, King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V. This king is considered to have contributed greatly to the development of Thailand, with his most important reform being the abolition of slavery in the country.

King Chulalongkorn was born in 1853, and received the throne of Thailand in 1868 at the age of 16 after the demise of his father King Mongkut. King Chulalongkorn ruled Thailand for no less than 42 years, always working to modernize Thailand and uplifting the condition of the Thai people. His reign was characterized by vigorous reform and development, always focusing on the welfare of the Thai people. The king is credited with bringing Thailand into the modern world, and revered for making Thailand a prosperous nation.

The king studied the political systems of the Western democracies and forged strong relationships with world powers like France, Britain, Russia and America. Royal children were sent abroad to complete their education in Western countries. Although King Chulalongkorn was very much interested in learning about the systems of Western nations, he firmly resisted the efforts of foreign powers to dominate the Thai nation.

King Chulalongkorn is recognized as the first Thai sovereign to travel widely, both to Europe and neighbouring Asian nations. The king was accorded respect and warm hospitality by the royalty of the nations that he visited.

The kings major achievements include the ending of slavery, the creation of telegraph and post services and the development of communication infrastructure through the expansion of the railway network in the country. He also focused on the development of public resources especially in the sectors of education and health. The king is also revered for his astute leadership in resisting the forces of colonialism and preserving Thailands independence.

Today many Thais from all walks of life demonstrate their veneration of King Chulalongkorn by placing wreaths on his statue located in the Royal Plaza on Chulalongkorn Day. Other monuments in the provinces dedicated to this great king are similarly adorned on this day. Candles are also lit in memory of the departed monarch.
