Church Projector Systems For Large And Small Churches
There are three components to a church projector system one or more computers
, a projector and a screen. The positioning of each component needs to be carefully planned. There are portable systems using a moveable stand and trolley and there are fixed systems. Many portable tripod screens cannot be set high enough for the whole congregation to see, and there are safety issues with trailing leads and security issues for storing the equipment safely

A large range of projection screens are available which may be portable, free standing for the floor, table or tripod stands. They can be fixtures, wall mounted or ceiling mounted. Screens maybe permanent, hand operated or electrically operated. They come in an enormous variation of sizes and can be front or rear projection screens. Screen materials also vary and can be matt white, grey or beaded glass to suit the light levels in the church. Ideally a large projection screen should be retractable so that it can be moved out of view when not in use.
The light output of projectors is measured in ANSI Lumens. The higher the light output, the greater the cost of the projector but the larger and brighter the image. Some small churches can use a relatively small screen and lower powered projector of only 1500-1700 ANSI lumens. However for brighter images that are affected less by extraneous light in a larger building with several windows you may well need more than 3000 ANSI lumen. Your installer will be able to advise the best projector power output to suit the ambient light conditions in your church.
The projector can also be mobile or fixed. An AV cabinet which contains the projector and sound system is one way to provide projected images. For larger installations a fixed projector with a wall or more likely a ceiling or truss mounted projector pole will be needed. These will normally have an integral cable management system to hide the projector cables. Two cables are normally required a VGA or HDMI cable for a computer connection and a composite video cable for DVD player or similar
Initially the projected image needs setting to the correct format which is called keystoning where the picture is not square when projected on the screen. This is easily corrected in modern projectors using the remote control, in fixed installations this would be set by the installer and should not need adjustment after installation.
A projector system has a wide variety of uses in a church. Hymn and song words, liturgy, and Bible readings can be shown with video clips, graphics and sermon notes. There are two options for computers to drive the system, either a desktop computer or a laptop with suitable cabling outlets to connect to the projector and sound systems.
It is important to choose suitable software for your Church projector system especially for hymn and song projection. There is a compromise between the number of words seen and the size of the text for hymn or Bible reading.
You may require more than one computer connected to the projector. One might be used in the pulpit for sermon illustration and a different computer for projecting the words of hymns. Suitable equipment is available to cater for these situations.
Audio visual cabling is an important feature of the design both in terms of technical performance, connectivity for all the systems and safety for ease of use.
Adequate power sockets will also be needed to service the equipment including, a computer, a monitor, a splitter or switcher for multiple inputs, the projector itself and sound systems. Professional cabling segregating the audio, visual power and data sources is needed to comply with wiring regulations to avoid interference and to maintain a safe environment for users.
The adoption of church projector systems is a growing and extremely valuable contributor to the vitality, life and worship of the church. Whilst there may well still be those who prefer written word for worship but as time and technology move on other forms of presentation used correctly and sensitively, enrich and inspire worship.
