Church of Scientology's Volunteer Ministers Help Florida Blood Services Save Lives
CLEARWATER: This past Saturday, the Church of Scientology's Volunteer Ministers held
their 3rd Blood Drive of the year for Florida Blood Services, collecting 75 pints in all, which can save up to 225 lives.
The Church of Scientology has been partnering with Florida Blood Services for 15 years, donating an estimated number of 1500 pints said Church spokeswoman Pat Harney. She also said that to keep up with daily needs here in the Tampa Bay area, Florida Blood Services needs to collect 750 pints a day, seven days a week
"90% of the population are going to need donated blood in their lifetime," added Harney, "but only 37% of the US population is eligible to give blood, and less than 10% do, so every pint counts, and we are honored to be able to help."
Judy Fagerman, the Volunteer Minister In-Charge for Tampa Bay, helped facilitate this fall blood drive. She has been active as a Volunteer Minister since 9/11, when she traveled to New York and assisted the rescue efforts there.
"Since 9-11, I've never stopped helping. That experience helped me to realize that that is what I am meant to do. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you have truly helped someone. "
Fagerman was pleased to see so many first-time donors at the event. "I want to especially thank Shawn Float of Washburn Academy. Shawn, along with Richard and Roberta Washburn, their staff and students are very active with the Volunteer Ministers and nearly a dozen of them came to the blood drive."
The Volunteer Ministers are an international disaster relief and humanitarian force, spanning 114 nations. They deliver aid to situation large and small from teaching a 3rd grader how to read to delivering aid to those suffering the impact of a 8.0 earthquake, such as the one that struck Haiti earlier this year.
"The founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, said A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well,' and those are words that I live by," said Fagerman.
Fagerman encourages those who would like to learn more about the Volunteer Ministers to go to
