Cigar Draw: Understanding The Difference In Smokes
For new cigar smokers, it's tempting to believe that all cigars draw similarly
. However, that's pretty far from the truth, as you'll discover during your smoking explorations. What you'll quickly find yourself asking, in fact, is why some cigars are difficult to draw. What makes one cigar hard to draw on, while another is smooth and easy? You might expect the draw factor to be similar across a particular brand, or even a particular batch, but you will find that's not true either. So, what affects the draw?
Cigar smokers will find there are two different types of smokes out there, hand rolled and machine rolled. The finer cigar manufacturers only roll by hand, but there are plenty of enjoyable machine rolled smokes to enjoy. However, if you smoke mostly machine rolled cigars, you'll find that switching to hand rolled smokes is a little strange.
Because machine rolled cigars are done perfectly, every time (because they're rolled by a machine, using a form that doesn't allow any deviation from the norm), they all have the same draw. One cigar will have the same draw as another cigar from these manufacturers (provided they're the same style and size, of course). However, you will find that is not really true for hand rolled smokes. Why is this? You would think that of the two, hand rolled cigars would always be better than machine rolled options, right?
Here's the thing, hand rolled cigars are rolled by human beings. That means that each cigar is different than the rest, in every way. Those differences can include the amount of filling in the cigar or even the tightness of the wrapper. While high quality hand rolled cigars are the ultimate in smoking enjoyment, you will find that they vary. That diversity and variation is part of the enjoyment here.
If you find that you are having difficulty drawing through a batch of cigars, it's best to let them age. The aging process can relax the wrapper and help ease the draw. Make sure that you age them in the right environment though; your humidor should be at about 75% humidity in order to ease wrapper tightness. However, if you leave them for too long in high humidity environments, you can expect your cigars to start becoming soft. You might also consider buying from a cigar manufacturer that offers a return/exchange policy.
