Cigar Etiquette Tips For Novice Smokers

Cigar smokers often maintain a certain level of etiquette in order to earn respect from fellow smokers and to prevent embarrassing social situations

. While there aren't many rules and regulations when it comes to smoking your favorite stogie, there are a few habits that you should develop that will assist you in preventing common blunders made by novice smokers.

Quality cigars will need to be cut first before they are smoked. While you may have seen actors in old westerns biting the end of their cigar off, it is not considered proper etiquette to do this. Even more importantly, doing this will lead to an uneven smoke that will compromise the flavor and is likely to cause the wrapper to unravel. Whenever cutting your cigar, use a device that is specifically designed for this purpose such as cigar scissors, a cigar punch, or a guillotine cutter.

Next, it's time to light the cigar. Is there an etiquette for lighting cigars? The answer to this is yes. There are many factors to consider before lighting up. First, if you are in a public place, make sure that smoking is allowed in the area and, if it is allowed, check to see if there are other people in your vicinity. If so, ask them if they mind that you light up.

The method that you use to light your cigar will also make a big difference in whether you appear a novice or an experienced smoker. Avoid using regular paper matches to light your cigar. Most aficionados use a butane lighter since these devices do not emit an odor that compromises the flavor of the smoke. Sulfur-free wooden matches also work well for this purpose. Whatever lighting source you use, it is best to only light your own cigar and to not hold the flame up for other cigar smokers. Lighting a cigar takes a certain technique and most experienced cigar smokers will want to light their own cigars. If another cigar smoker asks if they can borrow your lighter, simply hand them the lighter and allow them to light their own smoke.

When ashing your cigar, make sure that you don't flick the ashes. This is not only considered improper etiquette, but has the potential to ruin your smoke when the ember is knocked off. Allow the ash to build up enough so that the cigar burns at the most favorable temperature, but be sure to ash it before the ash falls off on its own. You will then be able to enjoy a smoke using proper etiquette while ensuring an enjoyable smoke.
