Performance testing is generally conducted to find out how a system / software performs when it is put under stress

. This test also helps in determining how reliable and scalable the system under test is. When conducting performance testing there are certain things that need to be kept in mind.

- We need to identify the type of Performance tests to be conducted

- Set the goals that we would like to achieve through these tests

- Identify the tools that we would be using

The type of test will be decided based on the clients specifications and the output that is required.

Type of Performance tests

Load testing is the basic and most common type of performance test that is conducted. This type of test is usually conducted to determine how a system will function under a specific load. The load usually comprises of a number of concurrent users who access the system and perform certain tasks at the same time. This will give us an idea of how the critical systems function and respond to the load.

Stress testing will help us understand the maximum limits of capacity under which a system can function. This type of test is usually conducted to find out how a system will perform when the load goes beyond the expected.

Endurance test (Soak testing) is usually conducted to determine if the system will be able to function as expected under a continuous load. During this test the system memory utilization is monitored to check for any failures. The idea behind this test is to ensure that even under a continuous load, the system will function normally as expected.

Spike testing involves suddenly increasing the load on the system by a large amount. The idea of the test is to find out if there will be any change in the performance or will the system be able to handle the load or will it crash.

Configuration testing is conducted to find of if changes to the systems component configuration will have an impact of the performance of the system.

Performance testing is conducted to find out:

To show that the system meets all the performance criteria

In case of multiple systems, to find out which one performs better

To identify the parts of the system that cause failure when put under a specific load

For a performance testing cycle to be successful, it is absolutely necessary for realistic goals to be set. The system under test should as close a match as possible to the actual production environment. It is advisable to always keep performance testing separate and not club it with any other forms of testing. This is to ensure that the results of the test are as accurate as possible.
