Cincinnati Bengals 2010 Season Predictions

Cincinnati Bengals 2010 Season Predictions

The Cincinnati Bengals came out of nowhere in 2009 to win the AFC North, as they swept the division on their way to a 10-6 season. However the Bengals were unable to do anything in the postseason, as they were knocked out in the first round by the New York Jets. This year the Bengals are hoping that they can put together another winning season, but it might not be all that easy, the Bengals haven't had back to back winning seasons in the last 28 years. To get you going on the upcoming season here is a look at what the Bengals will bring to the table on both sides of the ball, plus my prediction on where they finish the season in the AFC North.

Offense: The Bengals became a run first team in 2009 under the power running of Cedric Benson, who racked up 1,251 yards and six touchdowns in just 13 games. Bernard Scott is a speedy backup that gives the Bengals a good change of pace when Benson needs a break.

The Bengals need to be able to throw the ball better than they did in 2009, as they ranked 26th in NFL with just 181 yards a game in the air. Quarterback Carson Palmer started all 16 games, but showed some signs of tiring out at the end of the season, as his accuracy was not what you would expect late in the season.

To help out Palmer and the passing game the Bengals really addressed upgrading the receiving corps this offseason. They went out and signed Antonio Bryant to give Palmer a solid deep threat and go to guy behind No.1 receiver Chad Ochocinco. The Bengals also brought in Matt Jones and drafted Jordan Shipley. The biggest move in my opinion was drafting tight end Jermaine Greshman in the first round, who figures to start right away.

The offensive line remains pretty much intact this season. The team is hoping that 2009 first round pick Andre Smith can become the starter at right tackle, after really playing well down the final six games of the season. Andrew Whitworth really came on strong in his first season at left tackle, while veteran right guard Bobbie Williams remained the team's best run blocker.

Defense: Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has quickly turned the Bengals defense into one of the best the NFL has to offer. In 2009 this unit ranked sixth in pass defense and seventh in run defense, and should be even better this season if they can stay healthy.

Up front defensive tackle Tank Williams battled a foot injury for most of the season, and should be even better this season at putting pressure on the quarterback. Playing alongside Williams is run stopper Domata Peko. Defensive end Antwan Odom was putting together a monster year with 8 sacks in just six games, but an Achillies tear ended his season. Robert Geathers had just 4.5 sacks at the other end spot, and is expected to get a push from Michael Johnson and rookie Carlos Dunlap.

At linebacker the Bengals have to very good young players on the outside in Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga, but they are hoping that Rivers can provide even more in his third season. Veteran Dhani Jones led the team in tackles at middle linebacker, and is the leader of this defense.

The secondary is a big strength for the Bengals when they are healthy. Corners Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hal form one of the best duos in the NFL, but for this defense to really be good they need safeties Roy Williams and Chris Crocker to be in the lineup.

Prediction 2nd AFC North: I don't think we will see the Bengals sweep the division in 2010, as I believe the Ravens are primed for a big season, but I do think this team is good enough to put together another winning season and finish second in the division.

Find out where I have the rest of the teams picked to finish the season in my 2010 NFL predictions. If you plan on betting the NFL this season, be sure to check back each week for our live NFL odds.
